AOL 033: Bennet Kelley – How to Start a Law Firm Twice
Today’s guest on The Art of Lawyering Podcast is something of an anomaly. Bennet Kelley has started not one but two successful law firms – the first because he had to and the second because he wanted to.
Bennet focuses on an area of law that I’d never really even thought about before – cyber harassment. He helps people and companies who are being taken advantage of by people on the web. Think that person who is having naked pictures of themselves broadcast over Instagram – Bennet helps to stop that. We talk a lot about how to start a law firm in a niche area and how to get your name out there when know one knows what you do.
More About Bennet Kelley
Bennet is a bit of a Renaissance Man. If you take a look at his website not only will you find sterling credentials related to cyber harassment, you’ll also see pictures of him shaking hands with Bill Clinton and Al gore, and in the interview he tells a story about being a part of a great piece of history.
Not only is he still writing political pieces in publications that include the Huffington Post, but he hosts his own podcast, Cyber Law and Business Report. Needless to say he’s a busy guy.
One of the key takeaways from this interview is the need to always do great work and not be afraid to spread the word about what you are doing.
In This Episode You’ll Also Hear:
- What happens when you are supposed to start a new job on Sept. 10, 2001;
- How to start a law firm with no clients;
- What the most important trait is of a successful law firm owner;
- One habit that has contributed to his success;
- How being the son of a public defender shaped his world view; and
- Much much more!
One theme carries throughout this interview – if you put yourself in situations to be successful and take advantages of those situations when they arise, you’ll not just come out on top but build something that will last for a long time.
