LFMM 009: The 2012 Smalley Awards!

In this session of the Law Firm Marketing Mastery Podcast I hand out my 2012 Smalley Awards, given for the best of the best of 2012. Categories include: books; podcasts; software; hardware; courses; and more! The Smalley’s were literally invented this week. I got the idea from a podcast I regularly listen to, and because my last name is Small I thought the “Smalley” would be a great name for these awards. The great news about this is, when you’re done listening, you’re going to have a list of, for the most part, free resources that will dramatically improve your work flow, your efficiency, and, in the end, your bottom line. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! In this Episode I Talk About: My week in review, including the results of my direct mail marketing campaign and a major change for! The 2012 Smalley Awards for the best tools, courses, and podcasts Law Firm Marketing Mastery has […]

Law Firm Marketing: What’s in a Name?

If you listened to the last Law Firm Marketing Mastery Podcast, you heard me talk about a conversation I had with a colleague named Sarah. Sarah started her law firm pretty recently, heard I was kind of in the “business” of starting a law firm, and wanted to talk. And talk we did. We talked about a bunch of different things over the course of the hour, and one of the things we talked about, that I thought was ripe for a blog post, was what she should name her firm. As we were talking about that, I reminisced back to when I started my firm. Because I had my starting a law firm blog going on at that time I know that I wrote at least 3 separate blog posts about naming my law firm. For at least a week it consumed my life. But is it worth it? Today we’re going to talk about that. Rule #1: Your […]

LFMM 008: Identifying Your Ideal Client

By: Christopher Small In this session of The Law Firm Marketing Mastery Podcast I talk about the importance of identifying your ideal client, a meeting I had with a lawyer in the middle of starting her own law firm, and a milestone this podcast has reached! One of the most important, and often most overlooked, aspects of marketing a law firm is knowing exactly who your ideal client is. If you don’t know who you’re trying to reach, you can’t create a plan to reach them. By the end of this episode, you’ll have a step-by-step way to identify your ideal client, and you might even have a couple of original ideas on how to market to them! In this Episode I Talk About: My Week in Review; The Importance of Identifying Your Ideal Client; HOW to Identify Your Ideal Client; and Why it’s Important to Participate in Life, Rather than Just Watch. LFMM 007: The Law Firm Marketing Tactics I Used to Get My Very First Clients

By: Christopher Small In this session of The Law Firm Marketing Mastery Podcast I talk about the law firm marketing tactics I used to get my very first clients. We all have to start out somewhere, right? Me? I started out at the bottom. No clients. No connections. No business. So I had to hustle my way to some business. And that meant doing some out of the box law firm marketing. And in this episode of the podcast, I tell you all about it. By the time you are done listening to this episode I guarantee you you’ll have some marketing ideas you have never heard of before (for example, check out the pic below – I did that!) In this Episode I Talk About: My Week in Review (including an update on my direct mail pieces); The Law Firm Marketing Tactics I Use to Get My First Clients; and Opportunities Lost… Right Click Here to Download the MP3 […]

LFMM 006: 3 Things that Separate Successful Law Firm Owners from Struggling Ones

By: Christopher Small Funny thing about podcasts, they are usually much better if you have the mic plugged into the computer before you start recording the podcast. In this case, I forgot to do that, although the audio isn’t that bad. Because I’m too lazy to redo the whole thing, I just let it fly as is. Have patience with me! In this session of the Law Firm Marketing Mastery Podcast I talk about the 3 things that separate successful law firm owners from owners that struggle, my first experience as a participant in a “meetup,” and a simple trick that can shave hours off of your work week. As I think about what I’m going to talk about each week, I am constantly coming back to those topics that fall under “mindset,” that psychological state you’ve got to put yourself in to get past the voices in your head telling you there is a chance that you could be […]

Why Don’t Lawyers Share Marketing Advice?

This is a question that has dogged me for a long time. There are a ton of lawyers out there, some that are doing well, some that aren’t, and I’m pretty sure no matter how well you’re doing you aren’t sharing your marketing experience with anyone else? I think there are probably three reasons for this: Most attorneys don’t feel comfortable talking about marketing – we aren’t sure if what we’re doing is working; If we do find something that works, we don’t want to give it away; and If we talk about marketing we’ll have to expose the fact that we may not be making as much money as we’d like everyone to think we are. Marketing Doesn’t Have to be a 4 Letter Word Originally my post for this week was going to be about how stupid the excuse that the economy sucks is for waiting to start a law firm (I’ll talk about it later) but this […]
